The Mike Wallace Interview

Many Rod Serling fans are familiar with the 1959 interview he did with Mike Wallace, but if you’ve never seen it, it’s well worth watching.

It’s not a quick two-minute affair. Instead, we get what is now a television rarity: a real discussion. You can watch all 21 minutes of it at the YouTube link below.

A number of things make this interview fascinating, especially Serling’s insights on censorship and what led to the creation of the Twilight Zone, which was just about to debut. Remember, as you watch it, that Serling was already a hugely successful writer, but no one had seen a single episode of the TV show that would go on to make him world famous.

And let’s not forget the massive amount of smoking both men manage to do. Enjoy:

About Paul

Hard-working, hard-playing fan of all pop culture, especially the Twilight Zone. Which led to a Twitter page. And then to a blog. And then to ... stay tuned. Yes, that's a picture of Rod Serling, not me. You can find the real me under the "Your Host" tab on my blog, along with biographical details that, while 100 percent accurate, sound kind of boastful and braggy. Sorry.

  1. Fascinating and riveting! So neat to see Mr. Serling as if he’s still “alive and well,” though, I have to admit, hearing a voice I’ve only heard in the context of the Twilight Zone, I keep waiting for him to break the Fourth Wall and say something like, “Yes, Mike, you think you know censorship, you think I’m a hack writer, but there is no censorship, and ‘hack’ takes on quite a different meaning…in the Twilight Zone…”! :-]

    Great post!

    • Thanks, Frank! In this case, I curbed my usual verbosity and just let the master speak. So yes, I agree — it’s a “great post”! :)
